A Special Shipment from Portugal!
While My Sister Knits likes to carry local and regional yarn, we also like finding international treasures that not many other shops carry.
An Often Overlooked Vital Need
Every year My Sister Knits has a sock drive in October. This year we are extending it until Black Friday.
Expand Your Skills!
My Sister Knits offers classes and other events for you to not only increase your knitting skills but have fun socializing!
Make It Tweed New Colors!
Today we are back to just plain fun eye candy, nothing serious or historical. While I was gone, My Sister Knits received an order of Make It Tweed new colors!
One Final Postcard from: Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada
This last postcard comes from southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Here we find the traditional Cowichan sweaters, knit by the Coastal Salish people.
A Postcard from: Bohuslan, Sweden
Our story today is one of developing an intricate, sought after knitting style. Unlike the other places we’ve visited, the Bohus Stickning (stickning is Swedish for knitting) tradition was created to sell high end, high fashion garments to consumers around the world.
A Postcard from: Fair Isle, Shetland, Scotland
This week we’ve traveled north to Fair Isle in Scotland’s Shetland Islands to learn a bit about Fair Isle knitting. Fair Isle itself is miniscule, three miles long and one and a half miles wide, has about 60 permanent residents, and is one of Britain’s most remote islands. Fun fact, Fair Isle has only had reliable 24/7 electricity since 2018!
A Postcard from: the Aran Islands
This week’s postcard comes to you from the Aran Islands, off of the west coast of Ireland. We’ve traveled west and north from last week. I’ve never been entirely sure of the difference between Aran sweaters and Guernsey/Gansey sweaters.
A Postcard from: Coastal England
Today your postcard comes from coastal England, the island of Guernsey specifically. Guernsey is one of the Channel Islands located in the English Channel near the French coast.
When It All Began
We’re going to start off with a brief history of the origins of knitting. It’s believed that knitting originated in Egypt between 500 and 1200 CE.
Simply Stunning Stromboli
My Sister Knits has a new display sample you’re going to want to see! This is a brand new, hot off the presses design from Caitlin Hunter, also known as Boyland Knitworks. Published in July, this pattern already has 157 projects listed on Ravelry!
Join Summer Lee’s Colorwork Cuff Club!
Julie has discovered designer Summer Lee’s Colorwork Cuff Club and she’s excited to share it with all sock knitters!
Not One But Two Trunk Shows!
My Sister Knits has not one but two trunk shows for your shopping pleasure!
The first one I want to tell you about is JEMS Luxe Fibers. Judy and Emily from Mississippi (JEMS) are both the owners of Agape Knits in Vicksburg, MS and the force behind JEMS Luxe Fibers. On Friday and Saturday, August 16th and 17th, Judy and Emily will bring their trunk show to My Sister Knits!
There’s Still Time!
Have you started yarn crawling yet? If not, there’s still time! You have until Saturday, August 10th to join in the fun.
The purpose of the Hot August Knits Yarn Crawl is to get knitters up and down Hwy 287 acquainted with the yarn shops in our area. They each have a different personality and stock items unique to each shop. ‘Crawlers’ as they are fondly called, have an opportunity to support local yarn shops and find out what’s available close by.
Found: A New Yarn on the Sock Wall
I found some yarn on the Sock Wall at My Sister Knits, the wall at the top of the stairs, that I’d never noticed before. Appalled that there was yarn in the shop that I knew absolutely nothing about, I decided to investigate! Unsurprisingly, Julie found us a yarn that has a heart-warming story.
The Quintet Shawlette - Easy and Fun
My Sister Knits has a gorgeous new shawl that we want to share with you, the Quintet Shawlette designed by Ambah O’Brien.
It’s Yarn Crawl Time!
The annual Hot August Knits yarn crawl starts Saturday, July 27 and goes through Saturday, August 10th. That gives you two full weekends, one Saturday, and the two weeks in between to see all of the shops!
An Invitation to a Yarn Tasting!
My Sister Knits cordially invites you to a yarn tasting! Participants will get a 10g ball of each of our four bases from Blacker Yarns. You’ll be able to hear about the history and special aspects of this yarn from Cornwall, England while you’re testing out/tasting the yarn. We are proud to be the only yarn shop in the United States to carry Blacker Yarn!
The Hipster Top, Joji’s Newest!
Today My Sister Knits is continuing with ideas for summer tops. We’ve had this one on display for a few weeks now but the pattern was just released a few days ago. Finally, we can officially tell you about it!
Trendy Tulsa Tank
Are you wanting a quick summer project? Something knit with nice big yarn for speedy results but one that won’t make you hot? My Sister Knits has you covered!
