An Invitation to a Yarn Tasting!

My Sister Knits cordially invites you to a yarn tasting! Participants will get a 10g ball of each of our four bases from Blacker Yarns. You’ll be able to hear about the history and special aspects of this yarn from Cornwall, England while you’re testing out/tasting the yarn. We are proud to be the only yarn shop in the United States to carry Blacker Yarn!

Yarn tastings are an awesome way to try out new yarn. You can knit with a small amount to get a feel for the fibers and how they act before you jump into a full meal!

Our yarn tasting will be Saturday, July 13th from 10:00 - 11:00. We ask that you register by Thursday, July 11th. You can email us at info@mysisterknits.com or by calling the shop at 970.407.1461. The only thing you need to bring is a variety of needles to use with fingering and DK weight yarn. We think that anything in the US 2 - 5 size range would be good.

The yarns you’ll have fun ‘tasting’ are:

BaM-booZLe

BaM-booZLe is a fingering weight sock yarn with bamboo for strength instead of nylon! Bamboo is a terrific substitute for nylon because it’s antibacterial, hypoallergenic, thermo-regulating, and absorbs moisture. The wool in this yarn is a blend of Romney and BFL. Besides socks, this yarn will make lovely summer tops and accessories. With its characteristic stitch definition and shine, it’s a dream for socks, anything with lace, lightweight sweaters or anything else you want to make!

Tamar 4-ply

Tamar 4-ply is a fingering weight luxurious  yarn with a sheen. It’s worsted spun which enhances its drape and shine. Tamar is a blend of Wensleydale, Teeswater, Cotswold, and Leicester Longwool. These are among the most distinctive British breeds and have been listed as either ‘at risk’ or ‘vulnerable’ by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. Cotswold and Leicester Longwool date back to the 13th and 17th centuries respectively. Blacker Yarns buys this fiber directly from small farmers in the UK who are working to preserve these breeds. There’s also some Cornish Mule added to to give the yarn some bounce.

Gotland DK

Gotland DK is obviously a DK weight. Gotland is originally a Swedish breed but Blacker’s fleece comes from flocks in the UK. They are the only sheep that produce a genuinely gray fleece which creates beautifully subtle colors. This year’s crop of Blacker’s Gotland came from just three flocks. It is luminous and has a long staple length that lessens the 'itch' factor and piling which are always good things!

Samite DK Silk Blend

Samite DK Silk Blend is a limited edition that pays homage to King Arthur. In the middle ages, Samite was a heavy, luxurious silk fabric. This yarn is a blend of BFL (for smooth drape), Shetland (for ‘bouncy froth’), and recycled silk (for guilt-free silk).  Colors in this yarn have been inspired by characters from the legend. It’s woolen spun, making it superb for colorwork, textured stitches, and cables.

Blacker Yarns specializes in breed-specific yarns from sheep in the UK, all spun and dyed at their mill and dye plant in southwest England.

Again, please register by Thursday, July 11th for this unique yarn tasting event where you’ll get an exclusive introduction to these lovely, uncommon yarns. We can’t wait to see you there!

Happy knitting,
