The Rhinebeck Sweater 2026
It’s the time of year when Andrea Mowry publishes what has become her annual Rhinebeck sweater. The sweater, published just this week, is her 9th one, called Antipodes. Rhinebeck is the town where the New York Sheep and Wool Festival has been held since 1980. ‘Rhinebeck’, as it is commonly referred to, has developed into an extremely popular destination for animal and fiber enthusiasts and draws international attendance.
In 2013, Ysolda Teague published a book of patterns from different designers; these patterns were sweaters that they would wear to Rhinebeck and the title of the book is The Rhinebeck Sweater. In this way, the term has become part of knitting jargon.

A Rhinebeck sweater is one that is made specifically to wear for the first time when attending The New York Sheep and Wool Festival. Any pattern can become one; Andrea’s, however, have become legendary! This year’s has a simple, eye-catching stranded colorwork pattern and stripes.
These two photos show a sampling of the colorways we have in stock! From left to right: Kolkata, Hot Minute, Dear Diary, Tough Love, and Wallflower
Antipodes uses two skeins of the same colorway of Spincycle’s fingering weight Dyed in the Wool for most sizes. A few of the larger sizes need three skeins. I love it when a pattern calls for just a few skeins of Spincycle! As always, this pattern is thoroughly written with some Hot Tip! boxes sprinkled throughout.

You don’t have to be going to Rhinebeck to make a new sweater for fall, of course. Sometimes it’s fun to make something that you know knitters from all over are making. You can think of the multitudes of Antipodes being made while you’re working on yours!

Hot August Knits Yarn Crawl update
At your first store, you’ll pick up a paper Passport if you haven’t printed it out from the website. You’ll also scan a QR code to be registered as a participant. You’ll use your Passport at each yarn shop you go to; have it stamped at every stop. Then, when you’ve finished ‘crawling’ at your last shop, you’ll turn in your Passport. If you’ve been to every shop, this will automatically enter you into a drawing to win one of 8 Grand Prize baskets. Each shop is also having a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to ‘crawlers’ who go to their shops. Plus, each person who makes it to all 8 shops gets a $10 gift certificate to a shop of their choice as a thank you for finishing!
Pattern photos will be out soon for the knitting and crochet patterns that have been designed exclusively for the yarn crawl. We can’t wait to see them!
Absolutely adorable totes will be available at each shop also. Be aware that there is a limited number of them.
We hope the yarn crawl is on your calendar! It’s a fun time at each shop.
Happy stitching,
