Gossamer-like Schnee!
Schnee, a bewitching rectangular wrap designed by Melanie Berg, is an ethereal, light-as-a-feather accessory! Schnee (‘snow’ in German) has been on display at My Sister Knits for a few months and is like a beacon for me.
My first impression was that it was a rectangular wrap and they are my least favorite thing to make. My second impression was that it would require a lot of knitting time. Then I found out that it’s knit in two pieces and seamed together which gave me pause; I wondered if it would be difficult to get that second piece done. And then there was the idea of seaming….I read that someone wasn’t happy with her seam.
These negative impressions kept me away until one day I needed to move it. I felt how light it was. I wrapped it around my shoulders and I fell in love! Still, I hesitated. Every time I came into the shop it called to me. At first it whispered but the calling became louder until I couldn’t ignore it any longer.
I started thinking about what color I’d use. I found out that the seam is actually a three-needle bind off which I love doing. I always feel so clever! A knitting friend I talked to told me she’d knit it and it wasn’t a slog like I’d been fearing.
I tried it on again and imagined myself sitting outside on one of my favorite restaurant patios. The evening was getting cooler and I reached for my Schnee to glamorously toss around my shoulders. At that point I knew I was a goner but I still didn’t get the yarn I needed.
This week I finally got the yarn and the pattern! It will be perfect for those times when I want a social knitting project. My plan is to knit on it when I’m at My Sister Knits for Tuesday Knit Nights or on Friday afternoons (come by and knit for a bit and then come have a cocktail at Little on Mountain with us about 5!). It will be the ideal knit for watching my new favorite TV series on Prime, Rosemary and Thyme. I can knit while I’m watching The Untitled Goose Game with my grandson. I’m confident you also have plenty of times when you can fit in a row or two!
This is one of those projects where the end result is so elegant and appealing that you put up with any little perceived negative aspects! One word of caution: be sure to knit a gauge swatch! I advocate for gauge swatches all the time because I know they’re of utmost importance; that doesn’t mean that I love them. Even though I wanted to start right away, I know that I usually have to change needle size to get gauge. So, I made a swatch using the size 3 needles called for in the pattern. I’m so glad I did because I found out that my gauge on those 3s was not even close to the pattern! The lovely airiness of the wrap would have been lost and it would have been much smaller.
I was so far off that I’ve gone up two needle sizes for my next swatch which is still on my needles. Schnee is a delectable combination of stockinette and garter stitch, alternating between holding two yarns together and just one yarn. I highly recommend it!!!
Happy knitting,
Jenny
Update: I had to go up to a US size 7 to get gauge. That concerned me greatly until I realized that the gauge on the Silk Cloud band matched the pattern gauge of 20 stitches over 4 inches on size 7s! So I’m going with the size 7 needles. Also, I absolutely love knitting this and highly recommend it!
