Playful Polka Dot Yarn

Polka Dot Sheep yarn is now displayed on the My Sister Knits ‘New Wall’! Turn to the left as soon as you enter the shop and you can’t miss it!

We have two yarn bases, Super G and Rime. A yarn base consists of two parts:  the weight of the yarn and the fiber/s that the yarn is made of.  Independent dyers choose the base fiber they like and then work their color magic with their dyes.

Pair a variegated with a tonal for true gorgeousness!

Located in picturesque Whitefish, Montana next door to Glacier National Park, Aimee Alexander has combined her talent for dyeing with her yarn shop of the same name.

Super G, named after the Super Giant Slalom ski race, is a single-ply bulky weight yarn created with 55% merino and 45% camel. Yes, camel!  Oh, the softness! And the colors that Aimee created with this non-superwash base are incredible.

Look at these tonals!

Usually, yarn that hasn’t been superwashed has more softly muted colors because the yarn doesn’t take dye as easily. Aimee thinks it might be the way the camel fiber takes the dye that causes this yarn’s colorways to be so saturated.

Rime is named after a type of ice that forms crystal-like droplets on outerwear and trees alike; rather like hoar frost but different! The sparkles in this fingering weight yarn remind us of the sparkles in ice crystals. Rime is created with 78% superwash merino, 20% nylon, and 2% stellina for the fun sparkle.

So sparkly!

We can envision using Super G for Purl Soho’s Bandana Cowl, Sarah Hood’s Slash Dot Cowl, or maybe this interesting cowl by Alana Dakos. There are over 6,000 patterns for bulky weight cowls on Ravelry!

Rime would be great for socks but also for a sparkly shawl!  The deep red, green, and white would make an adorable and fun-to-wear holiday shawl.

To search Ravelry, go to ‘patterns’, click on ‘advanced search’, and then start choosing your filters. You’ll want to choose something from the category, weight, and craft boxes for sure.  You can also narrow down the number of patterns you’ll see by choosing ‘Ravelry download’ from the Availability box, and a number from the Yardage box. That will narrow your search quite a bit.  It’s fun to play around with the other filters so give it a try!

Knitting Conversations

Remember to sign up for our discussion of all things gauge on August 17th from 6:30 to 7:30.  This will kick off our monthly Knitting Conversations series which we intend to be both fun and informative!

We can thank the Reykjavik Grapevine for this photo of a uniquely colored sheep!

It’s been so enjoyable to have people join us in the garden and around the table again! You’re welcome to sit and knit, crochet, or do anything with yarn at any time.  However, we do have Knit Night on Tuesdays from late afternoon until 8pm and there are usually people knitting on Friday afternoons until 5. Consider this your own invitation to join us!

We hope to see you soon!

Happy Knitting,

Jenny
