Leftover City Cowl

Leftover City cowl, designed by Kacey Herlihy, is so much fun to make! It’s the perfect accessory to keep your neck warm as we transition into spring.

This pattern is designed with fingering weight in mind but Kacey gives explicit directions on how to adjust for different weights. This makes it easy to knit out of any weight yarn.

The pattern calls for 9 colors but you can use fewer if you like. When you use the same color for the ribbing at each end, you will need eight colors.  If you make it as written, you need 20 grams of Color A (ribbing) and 10 grams of the others.

If you want to look into your carefully curated collection of yarn (aka ‘stash’) and have a kitchen scale, you can weigh your yarn to see if you have 10 grams. However, if you’d rather keep it ultra-simple, we have kits at the shop!

This is one of the best introduction-to-colorwork designs we’ve seen...the colorwork sections all change colors every other stitch and that’s it.  There is no worrying about carrying your yarn over several stitches. You can rest and relax on the six rounds of plain knit stitch in between!

There is a chart but once you get started you won’t need it except to keep track of the color changes.  They are engrossing and the danger is that they may keep you up later than your bedtime!  When knitting this, you just can’t wait to use the next color!

Leftover City cowl settles into soft folds around your neck and is luxurious to wear!

Kacey includes three charts for you to play with and plan your color order. She suggests using a US size 4 16” needle for the ribbing and a US size 5 for the rest of the cowl. These sizes will give the fingering weight yarn a nice drape.

Made with pretty spring colors, this will lift your spirits and have you dreaming of warmer days to come!

Happy knitting!

Jenny
