Scrappy Garter Stitch Hats

Today, My Sister Knits is giving you a feast for your eyes! Two fun hats have come to our attention!

Both of them use garter stitch; one uses one strand of fingering weight yarn, the other uses two strands of fingering weight yarn held together.

Gather Garter Hat, with one strand of fingering weight yarn

Lindsay Degen’s Gather Garter Hat is lighter weight and has a fun slouchy pleated top. You knit 4 row stripes in garter stitch to make a large rectangle. It is seamed and then comes the magic! The pattern tells you exactly how to close the top to create the accordion pleats! That’s it!

Polka Beanie, with two strands of fingering weight held together

LIBE.KBH’S Polka Beanie is much more substantial and has no ‘flop factor’. This pattern is translated to English from Danish. The word ‘report’ is mentioned twice but it should be ‘repeat’. German Short Rows are used but not mentioned by name. Just follow the directions and you’ll magically make them!  Remember to knit the double stitch that you created when you turned your work as one stitch when you come to it on Row 8. The pattern assumes you’ll do that. This video from Irish designer Carol Feller will help.

You could use mini skeins!

Both of these hats inspire creativity! The colors are limited only by your imagination. You might have some leftover bits and pieces of yarn that you’ve been keeping ‘just in case’. Add a little new yarn to complete your color plan and you’re off to the races! Why I think of idioms (that are mostly from my English mother) while I’m writing blog posts is beyond me! Should I leave them in?

Or you could use three skeins and hold different colors together to create some marls!

Or you could use some 50g hanks of Woolstok Light!

Karen and I had a great time finding yarns that would be fun to use for these hats and we think you will, too! The possibilities are endless!

Reminders
January Knitting Day is this Friday, the 26th from 10 until 4. We invite you to drop in for an hour or two or the whole day! This fun, uninterrupted knitting/crochet time is a gift to yourself. Join us for mutual support, fun conversation, and laughter!

Bring in your unused needles and yarn for Julie to take to the jail. The inmates have the option to learn to knit and they appreciate anything we can give them.

Happy knitting,
