Books for Every Purpose!

My Sister Kits has oodles of books; some are how-to resources, some have patterns, others have historical stories and breathtakingly beautiful photographs.

Since it’s December and the season of gifting, you might want to consider a book for a friend or even yourself! Here are six books that we encourage you to take a look at. Of course, we want you to browse through all of our books because there are so many wonderful ones!

Knit How, a Pom Pom Press publication

This book starts with how to cast on, make the knit and purl stitch, and bind off. Then it guides you through patterns of increasing difficulty. It’s amazingly thorough with both photographs and drawings to illustrate the techniques being taught. You will even learn how to fix some common mistakes! This is truly a one-stop-learn-to-knit book!

Patty Lyons’ Knitting Bag of Tricks

We’ve talked before about how much we like this book! Patty not only teaches us specific techniques but explains in detail why her approach works. She gets into the technicalities of knitting which makes our understanding of the act of creating stitches much deeper. This book is also filled with humor! It’s a necessary resource to have right beside you as you knit!

The Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns by Ann Budd

This book is chock full of basic patterns in multiple sizes and multiple gauges. Ann’s genius came up with easy to follow tables to knit almost anything from mittens to hats to socks to sweaters! You start with creating a fabric that you like. For instance, I’m using this book to make a pair of mittens for my grandson. I want them to be dense so I’ll swatch to find the fabric I like. Then I’ll measure the gauge, pick the hand circumference that will fit best, and follow the table for that gauge and size. I’m adding some design elements that will be easy because of the specific information given in the tables. Tips for success are sprinkled throughout, also! Sit down and look through this book, you’ll be glad you did!

Cast On Bind Off by Leslie Ann Bestor

This is one of the first books I added to my knitting library and I refer to it over and over again. There are step-by-step directions with close-up photographs for 54 different ways to begin and end your project. This is a fantastic resource if you want to change which cast on or bind off you want to use, along with suggestions for what to use with different types of projects. There is also a handy Getting It Right tip for each one!

Grand Shetland Adventure Knits by Gudrun Johnston & Mary Jane Mucklestone

Now this is a different type of book! It’s published by Laine Publishing which tells you that there will be gorgeous photos on quality paper. This book is full of patterns and stories. You’ll really get a feel of what it’s like to be on Shetland!  You may decide that you must be part of Gundrun and Mary Jane’s next group tour of Shetland!

Give yourself browsing time in the shop to pour over books that appeal to you!
