Looking Forward to the Hot August Knits Yarn Crawl!
The 16th annual Hot August Knits Yarn Crawl planning is well underway for this year. The dates are Saturday, August 1st through Sunday, August 9th. Once again, the participating shops will be open every day during the crawl. My Sister Knits wants you to get it on your calendars as it will be here in two shakes of a lamb’s tail, as my grandmother used to say.
This year’s yarn crawl has a theme of Sweet Sixteen, “all things candy-colored, cake-covered, sprinkle-dusted, and fiber-filled”. The special colors created for each shop by Colorado dyer Dawn, owner of Maker Wool, are gorgeous pastels that certainly reflect the theme. Each shop has 150 skeins of their own color and ours is called Blush.
There are a couple of things that are new this year. Note the time frame as it’s been condensed. Also, this year we have two patterns specifically designed for the yarn crawl yarn by local designers! One crochet and one knitting. These will be the exclusive property of the yarn crawl until February 2027 and only available to yarn crawl participants. The crochet one is a long rather skinny scarf with tassels at each pointed end. The knitting one is in the final design process and is an elongated triangle with fading stripes.
You may be wondering what exactly is a yarn crawl, anyway? From what I’ve heard, it’s like a pub crawl. Even though I’ve never been on a pub crawl, I envision lots of people meandering from pub to pub to try each one’s beer. That’s what a yarn crawl is, lots of people going from yarn shop to yarn shop to experience the personalities and yarn selection of each. We have eight participating yarn shops up and down the Front Range. The northernmost being Cowgirl Yarn in Laramie, WY and the southernmost being Fingerplay in Louisville, CO.
The owners of the eight shops get together to plan and encourage visitors from across the region to get out and explore new shops. ‘Crawlers’, as we like to refer to ourselves, get a passport at their first shop and get them stamped at each shop they go to. At the end of the crawl there will be a drawing to select eight people who went to all eight shops; those eight people will each win a gift basket from one of the shops. The gift baskets are identical in case you’re wondering!
We’ll follow up with more details as the time gets nearer. For now, get these dates on your summer calendar!
