Class Etiquette or How to be a Most Excellent Student!
Have you been thinking about taking a class at My Sister Knits? Are you possibly a little hesitant because you’re just not sure if it’s the right class for your skill set? We can help with that!
We are happy to answer all of your questions and offer suggestions. Once you’ve decided to sign up for a class, there are several things you can do to set yourself up for success.
When choosing a class, read the description carefully and take note of the skills that are required. If there’s something that you can’t do but you have your heart set on that particular class, arrange to learn that skill and practice it before the first session.
The yarn and needle requirements for every class have been chosen for a reason. If you’re taking a class with a pattern, the yarn weight and needle size will be obvious! If you’re learning a technique, such as Learn to Fix Mistakes or a Wednesday Skill Session, the teacher has chosen the yarn and needle size that will be easiest to work and learn with.
Think about your yarn choice; a light colored tonal or solid will be much easier to see your stitches than a wildly colored variegated or dark color. You might be surprised how difficult those are to count stitches/rows or to read your knitting! That’s one reason why I’ve never knitted anything black!
At our teacher meetings, we thoughtfully map out class sessions and requirements in order to finish the project in the time allotted. If your class has more than one session, please be sure that you can attend all sessions. There most likely will be homework that the teacher is counting on you to have done, perhaps before the first session. Be committed to doing it!
While we certainly understand that life can interfere with best laid plans, it’s to everyone’s benefit for class attendees to be at the same starting spot at the beginning of each session.
Now that you know how to be a Most Excellent Student, you’ve set yourself up for success in your class!
We want to teach what you want to learn. If you have any suggestions for future classes, please tell us!
