April Classes and a Clara Parkes Book!

A few weeks ago I wrote about giving your brain a break with a kit. Today, we’re going to focus on classes and making your brain work by learning something new!

We have a variety of classes in April to choose from:

Basic Knitting, Saturdays April 20th and 27th from 9:00 to 10:30 with Robin

In this class students will learn how to cast on, how to make the knit and purl stitches, and how to bind off as well as various other handy skills.

Learn to Fix Mistakes, Saturday, April 6th from 11:00 to 12:30 with Alex

This is an invaluable class! You’ll learn so much and be so proud of yourself when you can not only recognize but fix things that ‘aren’t quite right’!

The Hibernal Hat, designed by Summer Lee, Saturday, April 6th from 9:00 to 11:00 with Erika

This class requires some homework before it starts; you need to knit your preferred brim before the class. This hat design gives you a choice of two brims, a shorter one or a longer one. Erika will teach you how to do a yarn over (YO), pass a slipped stitch over (PSSO), knit two stitches together (K2TOG), and slip, slip, knit (SSK).

Nest Socks, designed by Katie Herrod, Saturdays April 13th, 20th, and 27th from 11:00 to 1:00 with Erika

These are DK weight, slouchy toe-up socks! You’ll learn the Turkish cast on, M1R and M1L increases, how to knit a shadow wrap heel, and the half-fisherman’s rib.

Colour Your Stars Mitts, designed by Christine Enstrom, Saturdays April 13th, 20th, and May 4th with Tiina from 2:00 to 4:00.

Students taking this class need to be comfortable with colorwork and Magic Loop. You need to knit a small swatch of stockinette as homework before the class starts. Your gauge should be 28 -30 stitches over 4”. Students will learn the Ladder Back technique for designs with long floats. These need lots of planning! Other skills include two-color provisional cast on using Barber cords, creating increases and decreases on Ladder Back fabric, and combining Ladder Back with traditional stranded knitting.

After all of that, you might need to give your brain a little rest by coming to our monthly Knitting Day hosted by me! Friday, April 26th from 10:00 to 4:00. This is where you come to knit on anything you like and be among congenial people!

Plan what you’d like to learn in April, please sign up two weeks before the class starts, and do your homework if there is any!

One last thing……..we now have copies of Clara Parkes’ book Vanishing Fleece!  Clara decided to buy a 676 pound bale of raw fleece and this book is her journey following it around the country while it becomes yarn. From scouring to spinning to dyeing, Clara was involved in every aspect of this fleece becoming four different kinds of yarn. It’s a fascinating read!

Happy knitting,
