Captivating Churchmouse Classics Cowl
The Two-Point Cowl that is on display at My Sister Knits is a Churchmouse Classics pattern. It’s modeled after their Easy Folded Poncho that over 4,500 people have made.
It’s a scaled down version and, unlike the poncho, it’s seamless! There are directions for this snuggly cowl to be made with either sport weight or chunky weight yarn. The design is entirely stockinette so it’s a chance for the yarn to be the focus of the project rather than textured stitches.
The designer suggests that we make two gauge swatches as part of the cowl is knit in the round and part of it is knit flat. This may sound like overkill but I know from experience that my gauge is visibly different using the same needles for flat and in-the-round knitting. Maybe not from three feet away or on a galloping horse but I could tell where I started knitting in the round!
Be sure to read the Needles and Notions section so you’ll have all of the right needles!
This is a pattern where it might be difficult to visualize everything that must be done before you start it. Trust the pattern and just go one step at a time!
You’ll need to do a provisional cast on. The method shown in the pattern is the same as this one. You’ll also need to do an e-loop cast on which is also known as the backward loop cast on. Finally, you’ll need to pick up and knit stitches. When I first started doing this I used a crochet hook to grab the yarn, pull it through, and get the stitch onto my needle. Actually, I’m quite pleased with myself when I can do it with my needle! I always have a crochet hook handy for when I need some help picking up and knitting tiny stitches. Keep that hook from your provisional cast on close!
The Two-Point Cowl has two sets of nicely finished edges, a slipped stitch shoulder edge and an I-cord bind off edge. The I-cord gives this a polished look and will help keep the edges from rolling. We’re encouraged to not skip the pressing step in the Finishing section as it “gives the fabric a designer, ready-to-wear finish”. Usually I’d give it a miss but when I make this, I’ll go the extra step.
Be sure to try on our sample! You’re going to fall in love with it!
Keep those socks coming in for our sock drive! We’re inching towards our goal of 1,000 pairs of new socks!
