Be Motivated by Maarly
Meet Maarly, a colorwork cowl designed by Lucia Ruiz de Aguirre. After reading the title, you’re probably wondering why and how you might be motivated by it! Well, let me tell you……
First off, this design is perfect for a novice ‘colorworker’! There is a simple colorwork chart that creates this intricate design. Only two colors are used and there are never more than three stitches in one color so there is no need to worry about catching floats! That makes it easier and faster.
There are 12 repeats of the chart design across each round of the cowl. When you add a stitch marker at the end of each repeat, you will know if your colorwork is off right away. Your stitches won’t match the chart!
This design is almost meditative and not stressful at all but it looks complicated and impressive. Some tips for stranded colorwork can be found in this article by Kate Atherly. I was pleasantly surprised to find that she does her colorwork the same way I do, which is so different from how most people are taught!
The whole entire pattern is on one page! There you have it, four reasons to be motivated by Maarly!
The pattern was designed for Wooldreamers fingering weight Dehesa de Barrera. This yarn is a limited edition of pure Spanish Merino, such a historical yarn. Merino sheep originated in Spain in the 12th century! You’ll be knitting with yarn from flocks that can be traced back at least 200 years with pure strains. How cool!
You’ll need to do a provisional cast; here is a link to our favorite one from Very Pink Knits. This is an excellent tutorial on how to perform the Kitchener stitch, also referred to as grafting.
Also, any one of us at My Sister Knits will be happy to help you with any of this! Every other Wednesday we have a Colorwork Wednesday from 1:00 - 3:00 where knitters gather to work on their projects.
Let your imagination run rampant when choosing colors for this lovely cowl! What mood do you want to evoke when wearing it? Do you want it for a holiday? How about pairing a solid color with Spincycle Dyed in the Wool? It’s a sport weight that can easily be knit at a fingering weight gauge, especially in this cowl.
As I’ve said more than once, we do love to see what combinations you put together for your projects and this one is no different! The possibilities are endless! It’s so much fun for us to join in on color selection so if you’d like a second or third opinion, don’t be shy in asking!
Our Sock Drive has started and we’ve already collected almost 100 new pairs of socks! This year, our goal is 1,000 pairs by Halloween. We know we can make it with your generous help!
Happy knitting,
