This and That
Happy New Year everyone! Instead of waxing poetic about our knitting at the end of one year and the beginning of the next, we’re going to dig right into some pertinent information!
We had a request for different types of stretchy bind offs. Having a couple of different ones in your knitting toolbox is helpful as they are useful for all types of garments or accessories. My Sister Knits carries an excellent book, Cast On Bind Off by Leslie Ann Bestor, that has clear photos and concise written directions. I’ve used this handy reference over and over and highly recommend it!
In addition to that book, here are some youtube videos where you can see the bind offs in action:
Slow Motion Stretchy Bind Off by VeryPink Knits, good for anything
also known as the K2togtbl Bind Off and the Russian Bind Off
Russian Bind Off (regular speed) by Romi Hill, good for anything
Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off by Liat Gat of KnitFreedom, good for ribbing
Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off w/modifications by Laura Nelkin, good for ribbing
Icelandic Bind Off by Laura Nelkin, good for garter, lace, rolled edges
Suspended Bind Off by Roxanne Richardson, good for tight knitters
I hope that these will add to your knitting bag of tricks!
Speaking of your knitting bag of tricks, I have some clarifying information about our Patty Lyons Knitting Bag of Tricks Workshop. Each month will focus on a different Lesson. These Lessons are stand-alone, meaning you don’t have to take the classes in order. They use swatches, some of which are used in more than one Lesson. I will note in the description for each month’s Lesson if you need a swatch from a previous month.
Also, each month the sign-ups are first come, first served and there are still slots available for the February class! In that Lesson we’ll learn so many clever and helpful things about gauge. Our knowledge and confidence will grow and we’ll become experts!
Calling all sock knitters! We’re offering a sock series that focuses on one type of heel each month. This series of one-session classes is going to expand your sock knitting skills exponentially! The first class is a Flap & Gusset Heel on Thursday Jan. 9th from 5:30 to 8pm. Yes, you read that right, it’s on Thursday! In this one-session class you’ll learn about all aspects of this type of heel. Some sock knitting experience is required but we’ve classified it as an Advanced Beginner level.
Those of us at My Sister Knits wish you a wonderful fibery start to 2025!
Happy knitting,
