As a continuation of our Sweater Season focus from last week, My Sister Knits has two samples from Ozetta right now that we’re eager to tell you about! One is a cardigan and one is a pullover. Both are knit at a worsted gauge. I was going to say that both are knit with worsted weight yarn but that wouldn’t be quite right. They are both knit with two yarns held together that creates a worsted weight gauge. However, you may choose to work with a single worsted weight yarn.

Ozetta was Hailey Smedley’s grandmother’s name. Hailey learned to knit from her and that’s who her company, based in Oklahoma, is named after. Wooldreamers contacted Hailey a few years ago and the result is a collaboration on colors of Saona. There are several, all named after something meaningful in Hailey’s life. Ozetta, obviously named after her grandmother; Sarichef, named after the street she lived on in Alaska; Guthrie, named after Hailey’s hometown; Notes which represents her love for music; 1985 is the year Hailey was born; Groen means green in Dutch and represents the time she spent living in The Netherlands; and finally Fratelli, named after characters in The Goonies which she watched with her sister. We will have the entire line of Saona colors in stock soon!

Hailey has several ‘Lakes’ patterns: The Lakes Crew Cardigan, Lakes Pullover, Lakes Jacket, Lakes V-neck Pullover, Lakes Cardigan, and even a Great Lakes Pullover. Our samples are the Lakes Pullover and the Lakes Crew Cardigan. The pullover is Diana’s favorite sweater to wear and she absolutely loves it. Tatiana, who knit our cardigan sample, said it was really fun to make. I’ve made a couple of Ozetta patterns and they are well written, easy to follow, and produce a gorgeous finished product. I have yarn for another one that I’m impatient to get to but I have something to finish first. Hmmm, do I really have to finish it? Yes, I promised myself I would!

If you examine our samples, you’ll find that each has a different collar. The cardigan has two options for sleeve/cuff styles and hems. The saddle shoulders help with the fit and add style.

A word about yarn choice….I encourage you to choose what you like. Our samples are structured and a bit heavy. You can use what Hailey suggests but don’t be afraid to go in a different direction. If you’d rather have a more ‘drapey’ sweater and one that is lighter in weight, we have several worsted weight yarn options for you to consider. I’d urge you to make a good sized swatch, probably at least 6” square, to know what the fabric will be like. Realistically, here’s what I’d do… I’d first make a smaller swatch of about 4” square to find out what needle size makes gauge. Then, after I got gauge, I’d use that needle to make a larger swatch to find out if I really did like the way the fabric hangs. Sometimes it’s important to do some experimenting first!
