Helping Others

My Sister Knits has a new project for you! We are offering free yarn and a free pattern for you to make something to help another person keep warm. We can make a tangible difference to unhoused people in Fort Collins.

There’s something special about creating something for someone who really needs it. All it takes is a bit of your time. These projects will go to the community closet, named The Giving Tree, at FoCo Cafe and will help someone keep warm.

FoCo Cafe, Feeding Our Community Ourselves, is a non-profit restaurant. They serve everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Patrons who are able, are encouraged to pay what a comparable meal would cost at another restaurant. Or more! People who aren’t able are asked to donate their time and volunteer as part of their Meal Exchange Program.

For those who don’t have enough warm clothing, a hat, a pair of mittens, or a cowl can make a world of difference. Every stitch can bring a little comfort to someone who’s struggling. Knitting these items reminds the recipients that someone is thinking of them and each item we can donate is an act of kindness for another. If you’d like, you could add a note with your project.

We have yarn set aside for just this purpose. We have fingering, DK, and worsted weights. If you’d like to make something quickly, you can double the worsted and have a bulky weight.  If you’d like to make something heavier than worsted but not as heavy as bulky, you can knit with a fingering and worsted held together!

We have several free patterns available but you can also go to Ravelry and find your own. To get started, go to Patterns and click on Advanced Search. From the filters, choose Accessories and then the category you want. Then choose the yarn weight. Lastly, under Availability, choose Free.

If you’re interested in getting involved, whether you’re a seasoned knitter or a newbie, it’s easy to make a difference. Together, we can help our neighbors be warm.

Purl Soho’s aran weight Bandana Cowl is an excellent way to practice your short rows! I’m going to try this with fingering held with worsted! Photo © Purl Soho

Come into the shop to choose your weight, color, and pattern and let’s put our current projects down for the time it will take us to knit something warm for someone who needs it!

Happy knitting,
