This and That

My Sister Knits has been on the waiting list to stock Hide and Hammer bags from England for quite some time. After patiently waiting for what seems like forever, we finally have these lovelies on our shelves!

These iconic, hand made project bags are Hide and Hammer’s signature design. The high quality canvas is produced by one of the oldest running mills in England. The leather for the straps has been carefully sourced and becomes even softer with use. The solid brass fittings are also made in England, at one of the UK’s remaining foundries. Needless to say, these are high quality bags that will hold up to hard use for years!

Hide and Hammer Roll Top bags

The roll top allows projects of varying sizes, from cowls to sweaters, to fit nicely. It has a flat bottom that stands up and there are oodles of pockets inside to hold patterns, needles, and notions. The adjustable leather straps can be removed when you need to wash your bag, gently by hand in warm water.

I have had one of these for years and it currently has a short sleeved sweater in it! There’s plenty of room for my notions bag and I can still roll the top several times before I fasten the strap over it. I love the flexibility of the canvas and how pliable the straps have become!

Wabarna Pompoms

Our fox and beaver pompoms come to us directly from Moonika Rander, owner of Wabarna in Estonia! The Estonian government has decreed that their animal population must be kept under control. Moonika works with hunters to put the pelts of the animals to good use; she uses as much of the pelt as possible to make pompoms and other products.

Her pompoms come with ribbons so they can be temporarily attached to anything that suits your fancy! A fun fact about the care of her pompoms: to freshen them up in the winter, toss them in the snow and it will liven them up instantly. When there is no snow, the freezer has to substitute. If your pompom gets wet, let it dry and fluff it up with a bit of freezer frost. We may plan a pompom fluffing party when it snows!

Your purchase of Wabarna pompoms is not only ethically sound but also helps a young mother in Estonia provide for her family by making the best use of pelts of animals who have died.

Stephen West’s Quadrangle Spires wrap

I once heard that it’s fun to have a project in mind that is a bit of a stretch for our individual capabilities, something we dream about making one day. We have such a project on display in the shop!  It’s Stephen West’s Quadrangle Spires rectangular shawl. This is indeed a masterpiece! Ours is knit with Spincycle Dyed in the Wool and Brooklyn Tweed Loft. We encourage you to take it down, inspect it closely, and marvel at its intricacy!
