The So Summer Shirt by Jessie Maed is a relaxed, slightly oversized shirt with a rolled hem and sleeves. It is knit from the bottom up. The original design is cropped, but this shirt can easily be modified to a longer length for a classic fitting shirt. In this class, we will cover gauge swatching, interpreting sizing in a pattern and choosing a size to knit based on your measurements and ideal fit. We will also cover the following techniques: provisional cast on, 3 needle bind off, and bottom up garment construction. This would be a great class for advanced beginners or anyone who is new to making garments. You should be comfortable with knitting in the round prior to taking this class. The class is divided into three sessions as follows:

Class 1 - July 1st: Choosing a size to knit based on our measurements and ideal fit, checking your gauge and learning the provisional cast on

Class 2 - July 8th: Folding the hem and discussing waist shaping

Class 3 - July 29th: Separating the body into front and back panels, short row shaping at shoulders, and 3 needle bind off

Supplies:

A fingering weight yarn, such as:

  • Wooldreamers Saona

  • Kaos Organic Soft Merino

  • Salty Blonde Fibers Cotton Merino

  • Knitting for Olive Merino

  • Yarn Matters Cool Sock Yarn

Please note that the original design for this shirt is cropped - it can be easily modified to be longer in length to fit your preference, but you may need to buy more yarn than the suggested yardage in the pattern if you choose to increase the length.

Circular needles:

  • US 5 – 3.75 mm circular needles (main body), 24 or 32 inches

  • US 3 – 3.25 mm circular needles (optional, used for ribbed finishes only)

Notions/miscellaneous supplies needed:

Scrap yarn, stitch markers, small scissors, ruler or measuring tape

Homework required to be completed prior to class:

Prior to class, please gather your supplies, including purchasing your pattern and yarn.  Using the recommended needles, cast on approximately 35 stitches using your preferred cast on and knit a swatch in stockinette. Measure your gauge and write it down.

Next, block your swatch. To block a knitting swatch, soak it in lukewarm water with a bit of wool wash for 15-20 minutes, then gently squeeze out excess water without wringing. Lay the damp swatch flat on a towel and allow it to air dry completely. This process helps the fibers relax and settle, giving you a more accurate gauge measurement for your project. Measure your gauge a second time and write those measurements down.

In addition to knitting your swatch, please review the pattern and decide what version of the hem you will be knitting, as you may need additional supplies based on the hem you choose. For example, you may choose to do a rolled hem (requiring a provisional cast on and scrap yarn), a 1x1 rib (requiring a smaller needle in addition to the main body needle), or a rolled stockinette edge (no additional tools needed).
