The Farnham Tee is a slightly oversized drop-shoulder t-shirt, with stripes and a half-twisted rib collar, that is worked top down, both flat and in the round. In this class, we will cover gauge swatching, interpreting sizing in a pattern, and choosing a size to knit based on your measurements and ideal fit. We will also cover twisted rib, German short rows, knitting stripes at the same time as short rows and picking up stitches, and knitting with plant based fibers. This would be a great class for intermediate knitters or adventurous beginners. Please note that this class is two sessions and is designed to provide you support and guidance through the early stages of the project so that you feel confident completing the rest of the shirt in your own time, but the entire shirt will not be completed during class time. You should be comfortable with knits and purls, and knitting in the round prior to taking this class.

Supplies:

Yarn requirements

Option 1: Two fingering weight yarns held together, such as:

  • One strand of Knitting for Olive Merino held with one strand Knitting for Olive Pure Silk (Gretchen’s pick for this project)

  • Two strands of Knitting for Olive Pure Silk

  • Two strands of Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton

  • Two strands of Wooldreamers Saona

  • Two strands of Salty Blonde Fibers Cool Blend

Option 2: A DK-Worsted weight yarn held single

  • Woolkfolk Brise

  • Hip Knits Wool Cuddle Me Cotton

  • Cascade Yarns Nifty Cotton

  • Blue Sky Fibers Organic Worsted Cotton

  • Explorer Knits Linen DK

Please note that if you are new to working with plant based fibers and new to the techniques in this pattern, particularly short rows, it is recommended that you choose a cotton or silk -wool blend for this project rather than a 100% cotton or 100% silk yarn. Plant based fibers can be less forgiving in terms of tension and any mistakes in the project, so having a wool blend may make things easier for you. Please come talk to Gretchen in the shop if you are unsure of what yarn to pick.

Needles:

  • Please note that you should choose needles for this project based on your ability to meet the gauge of the pattern with your yarn choice. If you are using 100% cotton or silk, or holding a single strand instead of double, you may need to go down in needle size to achieve the intended gauge of 20 st/4 inches.

  • Recommended needles:

    • For the body: 4.5 mm / US 7 (60-, 80-, and 100-cm / 24-, 32-, and 40-in cords) circular needles.

    • For the ribbing: 3.5 mm / US 4 (80- and/or 100-cm / 32- and/or 40-in cords)

Stitch markers, small scissors, ruler or measuring tape

Homework required to be completed prior to class:

Prior to class, please gather your supplies, including purchasing your pattern and yarn. If you aren’t sure about your yarn, you can buy one skein to swatch and then purchase the rest later after you complete your swatch! Using the recommended needles, cast on approximately 30 stitches using your preferred cast on and knit a swatch.

Measure your gauge and record it. Next, block your swatch. To block a knitting swatch, soak it in lukewarm water with a bit of wool wash for 15-20 minutes, then gently squeeze out excess water without wringing. Lay the damp swatch flat on a towel and allow it to air dry completely. This process helps the fibers relax and settle, giving you a more accurate gauge measurement for your project. Measure your gauge a second time and write those measurements down.
