Put a Smile on Your Face and a Spring in Your Step!
As I was walking into My Sister Knits Tuesday, it was sunny and cold. Since it’s the middle of February, I thought that a brand new brightly colored hat would be a fun thing to have! I love the hat I wear the most but it isn’t colorful.
Wouldn’t it brighten our spirits to pamper ourselves a bit and make a new hat with colors we don’t usually use? And maybe even use a yarn that isn’t one of our go-tos? And to not think about if the color complemented our coloring?
If you’ve been in the shop, you know that we have a multitude of hat samples. I chose three to show you that, with a little bit of imagination, could be so much fun for the cold days ahead. Even if we don’t have many, your new hat will lighten your step and bring you joy as you wear it!
Two by Two hat
First up is the one I can’t stop thinking about, the Two by Two hat designed by Anne Gagnon. To make it even better, this is a free pattern! Our sample is knit with worsted weight Foxy Wool held with Make It Tweed. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this combination of yellow and multicolored Make It Tweed with a yellow pompom! We have lots of colors of Make It Tweed and you can choose any worsted weight yarn to go with it. Add a fun, perhaps even contrasting, pom pom and you’ll be smiling every time you put it on!
Cat Love Hat
For some extra-special indulgence and self-pampering, there’s the Cat Love Hat, designed by SweaterFreak. Our sample is made with Clinton Hill Bespoke DK Cashmere and is a dream to feel! If cashmere is a little too indulgent, you could also make it out of any DK yarn. The projects pages on Ravelry give you an idea of color combinations you might like. Even though this hat would be so very soft to wear, I’m still thinking about that yellow Foxy and Make It Tweed!
Polka Hat
Lastly, we have the Polkabeanie, sometimes called the Polka Hat. It isn’t on Ravelry but we have it in the shop for you to purchase. This pattern is translated to English from Danish. The word ‘report’ is mentioned twice but it should be ‘repeat’. German Short Rows are used but not mentioned by name. This video from Irish designer Carol Feller will help. Just follow the directions and you’ll magically make them! Remember to knit the double stitch that you created when you turned your work as one stitch when you come to it on Row 8. The pattern assumes you’ll do that. Polkabeanie is knit sideways in garter stitch which is an unusual construction and fun to do!
Our sample is made with worsted weight Foxy Wool but I think worsted weight Walcot Origin would also be a good choice. The thing is to pick yarn that feels really nice in your hands while you knit or that you absolutely love the color, anything that makes you especially happy to be creating a new colorful hat for yourself!
Of course, these are only three out of so many hats that you could choose from! Who’s with me? Who’s going to make themselves a bright, colorful hat to see them through until it’s too warm for a hat?
Happy knitting,
