NEW YARN, NEW BOOKS!

I’m always eager to see what’s new at My Sister Knits when I return from a trip and this time was no different!

I found a fascinating new yarn, Make It Tweed from Danish Rico Design. This yarn is not designed to be used on its own! It’s made to be added to whatever you’re working with. Its lace/mohair weight is not going to noticeably change your gauge or the characteristics of your yarn.

You can imagine that it will show up more when it’s held with a fingering/sock weight yarn and less when it’s held with aran or bulky weight. It also shows more in garter stitch than stockinette.

So why use it? It gives your project a tweedy, rather rustic appearance. The little bits of color every so often are called noils or neps. They show up randomly which adds interest to your knitting or crocheting! The color changes continuously as you knit with it, making it difficult to put down!

Those of us at My Sister Knits are enthralled with learning about the fibers in our yarns. With that in mind, here is what goes into this fun addition to the yarns we carry…

Make It Tweed is a blend of 35% Viscose, 35% Acrylic, and 30% Polyamide. Now, to translate those terms!

Viscose is a manufactured fiber made from natural materials. A type of rayon, it uses cellulose which is the main component of plant cell walls.

Acrylic is a kind of plastic made from acrylic acid. Not a natural substance, it’s made from a chemical process.

Polyamide fiber is sometimes known as nylon. Actually, nylon is a type of polyamide! It improves strength and durability which is why it is so often found in sock yarns.

No matter what it’s made from, this teeny little yarn will be a fun addition to your next project!

I also found two new books in the shop!

Viking Knits is authored by Norwegian designer Lasse Matberg. It is filled with sweaters for all ages. Some have Nordic influences in the designs, some don’t. Most of the adult sweaters have men’s and women’s versions.

You’ll definitely feel the Norwegian influence when looking at and reading these patterns!

Textured Knits, with patterns by Brazilian designer Paula Pereira, is a treasure trove of new ideas! Paula adds a bit of texture to each pattern for a 3D effect. She also blends different yarns into one project. Sit down at our community table and carefully browse through this book, looking at each pattern to see where her imagination has taken her! It’s truly awe-inspiring!

Oh my gosh, who can resist these darlings?

Last but not least, Mouche & Friends has been restocked!! You absolutely must drop by to see the menagerie that’s growing and decide who you can’t live without!

Saturday, June 10th is Knit in Public Day! Join us in the garden, weather permitting, for treats and good times.
