Colorado Indie Dyers
My Sister Knits' passion is to find yarn that has something special about it, something that appeals to us in one way or another. It could come from as far away as Denmark or as near as Loveland, CO!
Today we want to highlight Colorado Indie dyers. It’s always interesting to learn how independent dyers became interested in their craft. Some started dyeing because they couldn’t find the exact colorways they wanted, some had other artistic pursuits that led them to yarn, and some had careers that were not panning out as expected.
Each dyer develops a unique palette based on their inspiration for the colorways they want to create, the ways they use color, and the types of dye they use. A good number start in their kitchen, garage, or basement with just a few skeins of yarn and one pot. As they refine their art of dyeing and their yarn becomes sought after, they grow out of their original space and eventually need a dedicated studio!
Six and Seven Fiber
Rachel loved art classes as a child. After she learned to knit in college she became passionate about fiber. She realized that she could transform her creativity and love of art into a career and now she lays awake at night dreaming up color combinations! Rachel is one of the few indie dyers who uses both superwash and non-superwash yarn as a base for her colors.
Woolberry Fiber Co.
Bethany and her husband Rhys are the exceptional team behind Woolberry Fiber Co. Bethany wanted a change in her life and had the thought to try dyeing yarn. She fell in love with the process and found that it was the exact change she needed! Having humanely sourced wool and making as small an impact on the environment as possible are important goals for Bethany and Rhys.
Explorer Knits
Ali learned to knit when she was quite young. In her early 20s she opened an Etsy shop to sell her hand-knit items. Through that shop and social media, she met supportive friends who encouraged her along the way. Her boyfriend at the time, now her husband, gave her a present of undyed yarn and dyeing materials. Those first five skeins of yarn morphed into a business!
Hue Loco
Nicole’s training in color theory certainly stands her in good stead! She puts this knowledge to use creating yarns that have dynamic color combinations. One of the fun things that Nicole does is create color collections based on different breeds of chickens! She also loves to create sets with speckled colors that blend well together, taking the guesswork out of choosing speckled yarns for a project!
We invite you to compare yarns from these talented Colorado dyers and find one you can’t live without!
Happy knitting,
