Holiday Gift Knitting

Hello everyone!

It’s that time of year again! At My Sister Knits we are realizing that there are only a few short weeks to get our gift knitting done so we’re carefully considering different projects. We need ones that will fly off our needles! We’re thinking that we aren’t the only ones in this predicament.

Towards that end, we have some suggestions for you. If you’re like me, you’ve recently decided that you do, after all, want to knit a few things for your knitworthy loved ones. In the last few weeks I’ve decided that my son and my daughter’s family need new hats. Really? Could I have decided this earlier? Could I change my mind? Well, yes I could but I don’t want to!

Accessories are our friends right now; hats, shawls, cowls, fingerless mitts, anything small.

This Snow Beanie for my grandbaby just needs a white pom pom  to finish it!

Here’s an idea for a baby or child. The Snow Beanie designed by Pernille Larsen of Knitting for Olive. It’s a little tedious because those snowflakes cause you to use three colors on some rows. However, if you’re making a small one, you can get it done in not too much time!

The Cloud Hat, a free pattern from The Lamb & Kid Designs, knits up in no time in Borstet Alpakka and is so soft and light! This one is going to my daughter but is in the shop for you to see until Christmas.

When you want to knit something special but you don’t have endless amounts of time to put into it, your yarn choice is important. This is a project to let the yarn shine! Borstet Alpakka is so soft and fluffy that all you want is a stockinette fabric.

Left, The Cloud Hat; right, The Weekend Hat

Another hat suggestion is The Weekend Hat, designed by Petite Knits. Julie knit our sample using two strands of fingering weight Woolstok Light together, creating the marled effect. The pattern calls for DK weight yarn but Julie’s modification is listed on the tag so pay attention to her number of cast on stitches! Even though it’s a one by one rib it should easily work up in time for Christmas!

I fell in love with a certain color of les garcons British Sport and am doubling it for a hat for my son-in-law. I knitted a swatch, got fabric that I liked, and searched on Ravelry for hats with my gauge. Again, it’s a plain hat with no cables or texture, I’m letting the yarn be the focal point. Living in Colorado, a person can always use a new hat and we have plenty of samples for you to consider!

left to right: The Bubble Bandana, The Italian Summer Scarf, Sophie Scarf, and Pembroke Scarf

If you’d rather make a lovely, neck-warming little scarf, we have some ideas for you also!

Stephen West’s The Bubble Bandana is one. It can be made with leftover bits of fingering weight yarn using as many colors as you want or just two or three colors. Our sample is made with a Sweet Tea Mini Kit. Stephen gives directions on how to customize the length, making it longer or shorter as you wish.

Petite Knits’ Sophie Scarf and Elizabeth McCarten’s free Pembroke Scarf pattern are quick knits. We have kits for the Pembroke. It’s smaller than the one in Elizabeth’s pattern. All you do is knit until the first small skein of yarn is used up and then you start decreasing! Julie wears hers almost daily.

The Italian Summer Scarf, a free pattern by An Italian Knitter, can be knit in any weight. Our display one is knit with fingering weight which makes it a nice small size.

left to right: Gabardine Cowl, Brigandine, and Sultano Fine Cowl

What about a cowl? They’re quick to knit!

The Gabardine Cowl makes a sophisticated accessory using two DK weight yarns and size 6 needles. Our sample is made of Clinton Hill Cashmere but any DK weight yarn will make a gorgeous cowl! The pattern is available in the shop.

Kirsten Hipsky’s triangular Brigandine cowl would be a lovely next-to-the-skin in a soft DK weight.

Les garcons Fluff is perfect for a stockinette project! We have two Sultano Fine Cowls, a Churchmouse pattern, knit with it. You couldn’t ask for a softer, easier gift project! It’s no longer available on Ravelry but we have the pattern in the shop.

We invite you into the shop to examine our samples! If none of them suit your needs, we’ll be happy to help you find the perfect gift projects!

Friday, November 22nd is Knitting Day from 10 - 4! What a ideal time to come in and work on those gift projects!

Our Black Friday sale is approaching! Everything in the shop will be 20% off for that day, Nov. 29th! No need to worry about choosing a sale item! And Saturday Nov. 20th we’ll give you a small gift with every purchase!
