Intro to Doodling!
Have you taken a close look at our Doodle card decks and learned how they work? If your answer is no, I’m right there with you. I thought they were cute but I hadn’t taken a close look at them as they seemed a bit overwhelming. It takes a little bit of study to understand them!
When I was at the Flock Fiber Festival in Seattle, Washington last weekend, I visited their booth which was colorful to the max and had so many samples! I wanted to learn more about the Doodle decks and now I’m having so much fun thinking about what I could do with them!
First of all, I looked at the How To Doodle With Yarn card that we have in the shop. I scanned the QR code on the card and all of the information you need is there! Jamie Lomax, the owner of Pacific Knit Co. and designer of the cards, walks you through all you need to know! I’m a person who likes to have everything spelled out for me and that’s exactly what Jamie does.
The first thing Jamie suggests we do is choose our project. There are some basic patterns for socks, hats, fingerless mitts, mittens, and more. Now my mind is whirling with ideas! I’m not a sock knitter (yet) and I’ve made several hats this summer but the idea of having some fun fingerless mitts or mittens is quite appealing. Or I could make some fun mittens for a grandchild!
The next thing you do is choose your pattern. I suppose you could do these two things in the opposite order of course, because I now see that they’re listed in opposite order in different places. Anyway, you choose your theme/charts and your pattern. My Sister Knits has Jamie’s basic sock and basic hat pattern cards which are good places to start.
Then you choose your DK yarn. There’s a free downloadable workbook that goes into all of this in detail. There is information about arranging your charts, how to modify for yarn weights other than DK, creating a color palette, determining yardage needs, and so much more! None of it is overwhelming!

When I looked at my first Doodle deck I was surprised to see that the cards are in gray-scale and not color. Then I thought about it and of course they are! That allows you to choose your own colors. The card decks I looked at came with instructions for a standard cowl and an infinity cowl.

These would be an easy way to get into colorwork. Choose a pattern, get yourself a deck of cards, and choose just one or two of the designs to work. The possibilities are endless!
Come into the shop with a little bit of time to spend looking at the pattern cards and the card decks. While you’re at it, look at our mini skeins because they’d be perfect to use!
Happy knitting,
