A Little of This, A Little of That

My Sister Knits is now carrying some amazing hand-beaded bracelets with the word ‘sister’ on them. The story behind these little works of art is intriguing.

The company, Moio, was founded by Gemma Levy, who was 18 at the time. Now a student at the University of Pennsylvania, Gemma has a lifelong connection to Zimbabwe through generations of Zimbabweans. On trips there as she was growing up, she spent enormous amounts of time learning the art of beading from skilled artisans in the flea markets.

When the pandemic hit, Gemma was passionate about helping the people she had grown to admire and care for. Her idea was to design modern bracelets in Brooklyn and have them made in the age-old tradition of hand beading. This gave the artists in Zimbabwe a way to earn an income during a difficult time.  Gemma and her mother, Danielle, teamed up for some intergenerational collaboration!  Danielle has a passion for merging Zimbabwean artistry with her experience as a fashion accessories editor. Together, they grew Moio into a company that has become “synonymous with quality, craftsmanship, and originality in the global market”.

In addition to ‘just’ selling bracelets, Gemma and Danielle have created training programs for young women that develop skills that in turn open doors to a brighter future. Their bracelets preserve the heritage of Shona artistry and allow it to continue. As their website says about using the wisdom of mothers and grandmothers, “through this harmonious collaboration, we breathe new life into age-old crafts, ensuring that the legacy of Shona craftsmanship endures and thrives”.

CFC Vintage Yak Sock Kits are here in limited numbers.

Next……

…. a delightful kit for sock knitters! The Camellia Fiber Co. kits that we have will make both your hands and feet so happy! The main yarn for these socks, CFC Yak Fingering, is a blend of 80% Merino, 10% Yak, and 10% Silk. The second yarn is their 64% Kid Mohair/36% Silk blend. They’ve added more silk to their mohair than usual, creating a softer yarn. It’s good to know that adding the Mohair doesn’t change the gauge of your fabric. The pattern is included with the kit. We only have this yarn in these kits; you’re going to want a pair of these socks if you’re a sock knitter! They will be warm and soft and fuzzy and you’ll be reluctant to take them off!

And finally…..

Just in! More darling needle stoppers including Labubus! These not only are cute as can be, they stay on your needles and don’t come off until you want them to!

We cordially invited you into the shop to explore to your heart’s content!

Happy knitting,
