One Shawl and Three Publications!
My Sister Knits has a sample of an impressive colorwork shawl! This shawl looks quite complicated due to the colorwork patterns used.
However, the colorwork is all slipped stitches and not difficult to work at all! This design will give you confidence in your knitting skills and make you feel so clever!
One way to determine if a design is within your skill set is to look at the pattern abbreviations. These will tell you what you need to know in order to be successful with your project. When you look at the abbreviations for this shawl, you’ll see that the most difficult design elements are kfb (knit in the front and the back of the same stitch), sl1 wyif (slip one stitch with the yarn in front), and sl1 wyib (slip one stitch with the yarn in back). Not difficult at all!
This shawl is Isabell Kraemer’s SSP (slip stitch party). Whether a beginner or a seasoned knitter, you will impress yourself by making this stunning accessory!
The pattern has two versions, one with six colors and one with two. There are three different slip-stitch patterns that create visual interest. Our display shawl is knit with Brooklyn Tweed Loft. When you try it on you’ll notice how lightweight it is. That’s because Loft is woolen spun which creates a lovely, lightweight, warm yarn. When choosing yarn for this project, compare the weight of 6 skeins of Loft to whatever yarn you’re considering. That will give you an estimation of the weight difference of the finished shawl.
Isabell’s pattern instructions are very clear and well thought out. The wrong side rows end with a sl1 wyif which makes a beautiful professional-looking border.
We are given the approximate yardage needed for all six colors. This is a great opportunity to go through your stash to see if you have a small amount of leftover yarn to use for one of the colors. You can mix more than one type of yarn to get fun results!
This shawl is certainly one that will wow your friends!
Also, we have three new publications from Laine that are sure to delight you!
Kalevala
The patterns in this book are based on folk songs and poetry from the national epic of Finland, the Kalevala. The poems in English in this book are taken from an 1888 translation! This book and the patterns in it are a piece of Finnish history.
They are primarily Icelandic-style yoked sweaters with Finnish inspiration, although there are some mittens, socks, and a hat. If you’re at all interested in folklore, this book is for you!
52 Weeks of Easy Knits
This book was created with beginning knitters in mind. There is in-depth information on reading patterns, basic tools, finishing, and techniques among other topics. The patterns use basic techniques and are written with more detail than usual.
It’s chockful of sweaters, hats, and scarves with a few socks and mittens thrown in for good measure! Some patterns are marked Super Easy while others will expand your skills. The Super Easy patterns are perfect for your first knitting project!
