Worldwide Knit in Public Day!

The second Saturday of June has been Worldwide Knit in Public Day since 2005. This is the largest annual knitting event whose purpose is to share in the joy of knitting and other fiber arts.

Hmmmmmmm

It was started by Danielle Landes, from Missouri, with the hope of helping to change the world. The official mission of the day is “Better Living Through Stitching Together”.  Astrid Salling, from Denmark, has organized it since 2011 so it is indeed a worldwide event! As of 2017 there were 54 countries who hosted events.

This looks idyllic!

Worldwide Knit in Public Day is a way for knitters to raise the profile of knitting in the public’s eye. We can come out of the woodwork and show up all over...in coffee houses, parks, on public transportation, at sporting events, on trips, anywhere you can think of to knit!

A few of us at My Sister Knits were talking about knitting in public the other day.  We remembered how nervous and conspicuous we felt the first time we pulled out our knitting around people who weren’t knitters.  Some of our families objected at first but now they expect us to carry our knitting almost everywhere.  Some family members even remind us to bring it along!

Knitters will be gathering to knit together all over the world this Saturday at all sorts of different events! My Sister Knits is hosting our own event and we’d like to invite you to join us. We hope to be knitting outside in both the front yard and the back garden depending on our own individual heat tolerance.

These two aren’t even related!

We’d love for some of you to plan to knit out front for a while, not that you have to, certainly!  We will bring you drinks and treats so you won’t miss out; just let us know you’re out there. You might inspire someone walking on Mountain to become a knitter! Plus, you’ll get to be the first to order your gelato from the Gelato & aMore mobile cart!  They’ll be at the shop from 2 until 3.

Win a large African Market Basket of your choice!

As part of our event, we’re going to have a drawing for one of Julie’s special finds….a straight-from-Africa Market Bag! Just post a photo of yourself knitting in public on Instagram and use the hashtag #mysisterknits. We will randomly draw a name and notify the winner on Tuesday, June 15th.

A reminder:

July classes are posted on our website!  Check them out to see if there’s one that calls to you. We’d like to clarify our two beginning knitting classes.  Basic Knitting is offered in July.  It’s a two-session class taught by Kelly.  Learn to Knit will be offered again in August.  It’s a four-session class taught by Jenny (me). We understand that this can be confusing!

We hope that you can join us for Worldwide Knit in Public Day

Happy Knitting,

Jenny
