Who is Emma?
Building on last week’s blog post, we have a second newly arrived trunk show composed of yarn!
Emma’s Yarn has an endearing background story. Emma, a home-schooled student, was studying ratios in her math class. Since she was at home, she took the opportunity to put her knowledge to real-life use and tried dyeing yarn!
Lucky for Emma, she comes from a fiber arts family and her parents own a yarn shop! She had a ready-made spot to see if her yarn would sell and the rest, as the saying goes, is history. We don’t normally think of Florida as a place to find a yarn company but that’s just where Emma’s Yarn comes from!
She moved from dyeing in the kitchen to a proper dye studio, her older sister joined her after graduating from college, and Emma’s Yarn took off in earnest.
When we talk about a yarn base, we’re talking about two things: the weight of the yarn (fingering, DK, worsted, etc.) and the fibers used to make the yarn (sheep breed, silk, alpaca, nylon, etc.). For our trunk show, we have three different bases.
Bodacious Bulky’s base is 100% superwash Merino, Practically Perfect Sock is a blend of 80% superwash Merino and 20% nylon, and Marvelous Mohair is a blend of 72% kid mohair and 28% silk.
An intriguing piece of knowledge about dye and fiber is that fibers and combinations of fibers take dye in a different way. Pick up a skein of each of those bases in the same colorway and you’ll see differences; sometimes subtle and sometimes not so subtle!
Along with the yarn, Emma has sent us samples for inspiration and some free pattern download codes for Ravelry.
This trunk show will be on display upstairs for two weeks. We invite you to the shop to see both of our yarn trunk shows before they have to go back and we’d love it if you’d tell us what colors and bases appeal to you!
Happy knitting,
Jenny
