A Rare Yarn

Just in!  Dreamy Tibetan Cloud from mYak! We love yarns with a good story and this one doesn’t disappoint.

Tibetan Sheep

Paola and Andrea’s lives came together in Tibet. Andrea, a veterinarian from Italy, went to Tibet to train local veterinarians and learn about their traditional medical practices. Meanwhile, Paola spent years traveling and living in China. He developed a love for Tibet and worked on the Tibetan Plateau with farmers and nomads to improve their conditions. The Tibetan Plateau, with an average altitude over 14,000’ and an area of 970,000 square miles, is often called “The Roof of the World”.

Paola and Andrea shared the life of the nomadic herders and discovered the tremendously soft undercoat of the baby yaks. It occurred to them that possibly they could turn this undercoat into a sustainable business that would enable the herders and their families to thrive on the land.  The Tibetan nomads have been producing fiber from yaks, goats, and sheep for centuries.  Paola and Andrea wanted to add value to it by having it spun in Italy and introduce this luxurious fiber to a larger audience. Their goal was to preserve the daily way of life and the animals’ natural environment. For more detailed information on the herders and their way of living, visit the mYak Meet Us page here

Tibetan Cloud is 100% Tibetan sheep wool, traceable back to the flock it comes from! This fiber is more like cashmere and baby yak than wool.  There is no ‘prickle factor’ and it glides across your needles like butter. While you’re knitting with this rare yarn, you can contemplate your lifestyle, the herder’s lifestyle, and how this yarn came to be in your hands from sheep living on ‘The Roof of the World’. It’s awe-inspiring!
