Oaken Shawl

My Sister Knits has a beautiful big cozy shawl on display!  It’s the Oaken shawl, designed by Tin Can Knits. The founders of Tin Can Knits, Emily and Alexa, can always be depended on to write clear, concise, easy to follow patterns.  They have excellent tutorials and many learn-to-knit patterns in addition to their other designs.

Our display shawl was knit with Brooklyn Tweed Shelter.  Because Shelter is woolen spun, it is a light and airy yarn.  When you try on this shawl you’ll hardly feel it as it is so lightweight.  Also because it is woolen spun, it is gloriously warm. This shawl is a dream to wear!  Please take it down and try it on when you’re in the shop!

This is quite a versatile pattern!  There are instructions for either a shawl or a blanket and there are instructions for using one color or two.  The pattern calls for aran weight yarn but ours is knit up with worsted; either will work perfectly!

Oaken would be smashing with Spincycle Dream State as a contrasting yarn!  There are so many delightful Spincycle colorways that would pair beautifully with Shelter. We have many choices of worsted weight yarns and colorways that will make this shawl unique and suited exactly to your personality!

This is a splendid pattern for someone wanting to try a project with a bit of lace. The directions for the lace section are both written and charted.  There are only four stitches: yarn overs, k2tog, ssk, and the much-easier-than-it-sounds sl1-k2tog-psso. That translates to: slip one stitch to the right hand needle, knit two stitches together, then lift up the slipped stitch and pass it over the k2tog and off the right hand needle. Not so scary after all!

We are offering a class on the Oaken shawl on Saturday, February 8th from 1:00 to 3:00.  Jess will teach you tips and tricks for knitting lace. Your homework before the class is to work the first garter stitch part of the pattern and there is important information on the class page on our website.  You will leave the class confident and excited about your lace skills!

Starting today, we have a new blog feature for you!  Julie loves to find items that particularly please her and that she thinks all of us will delight in also.  Usually they have something to do with knitting but not always. We are going to post a photo at the end of blog posts under the heading Julie’s Finds.  They may or may not have their own blog posts. If so, we’ll add a link so you can read more about them. If not, you can ask about them when you’re in the shop!

We hope you enjoy this new feature!  Let us know!
