Bits and Bobs

My Sister Knits has some bits and bobs to tell you about! The next time you come into the shop, give yourself a few minutes to discover new items that aren’t yarn.  You’ll be goggle-eyed at what you find!

You might notice our new canvas bag!  It’s olive green with ‘My Sister Knits’ embroidered on it. It’s large enough to hold all of your yarn for a sweater project and your purse!  Or you could take it with you on your next trip to a Farmers’ Market. Two pockets are ingeniously placed inside on the short ends and are the exact right size for a large water bottle. During our transition to Spring, you could stow it in the car with a jacket, hat, and gloves just in case. When you feel the time is right to explore Old Town again, it could hold your purchases as you stroll around. The possibilities are endless and you’ll be proudly sporting your very own My Sister Knits bag!

As you make your way around the shop, you will find new books and periodicals.

Strands of Joy is Finnish designer Anna Johanna’s first book of patterns. She has 116 patterns on Ravelry; sweaters, hats, shawls, socks, and more! Anna loved fashion design as a child and considered studying knitting design after high school but decided on a more realistic field that would provide employment.  Toward that end, she got her doctorate in Statistics!  Her dream of knitting design became a hobby and then her full-time passion.  This is a beautiful book containing 20 colorwork patterns.

Fair Isle Weekend is Mary Jane Mucklestone’s latest book. This is a small collection of eight patterns designed using Shetland wool and inspired by the traditional Fair Isle knitting style.  The designs are based on what she would take for a weekend on Fair Isle, the most remote inhabited island in the U.K.!

Mary Jane has been known for her beautiful colorwork for years.  She began experimenting with combining different colors when she was a young mom.  Her finances were tight and she bought her yarn from the sale bin.  She grew tired of making stripes and started making what she calls ‘picture patterns’.  We are the luckier for it!

Fair Isle Weekend is full of beautiful photographs and stories about each pattern. As you knit a design from this book you’ll easily be imagining a connection with Fair Isle knitters over the years and you may daydream about a trip there one day!

52 Weeks of Socks is a collection of socks from designers the world over.  Some are quite simple, others are more challenging.  This book, like the other two, is published by Laine Publishing, an arm of Laine magazine.  Like the magazine, these books are wonders to look at; the layout and photographs are stunning.

The Spring edition of Pompom Quarterly is inspired by quilts.  Each design has a connection to a quilting pattern and an interesting story. In addition to patterns, there is a thought-provoking article on quilting and identity and an interview with Sara Trail, founder of Social Justice Sewing Academy, which uses quilts as a form of expression.

As you delve further into the shop, you will come across our newest pompoms made in California!

As always, we invite you in to spend as much time as you like browsing and finding treasures new to you!

Happy knitting,

Jenny
