Let’s Have Some Colorful Fun!

KAL

Let’s have some fun! If you’re anything like me, you often look at our skeins of Spincycle yarn and ooh and aah over the colors but you don’t really know what you’d do with it so you leave it on the shelf. I have a favorite one right now with quite a bit of yellow and pink and other pastels. Possibly you have a skein of Spincycle in your stash that you want to use but you need a project for it!

Well, Spincycle Yarns launched a KAL that runs from April 1st to May 31st that has us excited! They’re calling it the Cowlgirl KAL…get it? I must admit it took us a minute…Cowlgirl! During April and May, cast on and finish any cowl and use approximately 50% (or more) Spincycle yarn in it. What a fantastic way to use the skein that is calling your name!

Originally Kate and Rachel, known as The Spinsters, wanted to allow only cowls that were designed with Spincycle but that has changed. Their intent was to honor the designers who use their yarn. You might want to keep that in mind as you choose your cowl pattern but now any cowl is eligible.

The rules are simple: after you’ve finished your cowl, submit a form with the name of the pattern and a photo to be eligible to win. That’s it! The prizes are gift cards for varying amounts of Spincycle yarn.

We have a page full of ideas for you available at My Sister Knits! You might be wondering how to enter a Ravelry search for cowls with Spincycle yarns. Go to Advanced Search under Patterns; choose Accessories, then Neck/Torso, and finally Cowl. Scroll down until you come to the More Search Options on the left side of the page. Find Suggested Yarn Name and enter Spincycle in the box. Apply that and you’ll have four pages of designs to choose from!

When buying Spincycle yarns we have a few tips that might prove helpful. If you’re purchasing multiple skeins, be sure to check the colorway on the label. Many of their colorways look quite a bit alike! Also, you’re encouraged to unwind the skein to see if the colors are what you want. Sometimes you can be surprised! No two Spincycle skeins are exactly the same and that’s the beauty of this yarn.

Kate and Rachel originally spun this yarn themselves on their spinning wheels and sold it at the farmer’s market in Bellingham, Washington. As their customer base grew, they had to figure out how to produce yarn on a large scale that looked just like their handspun. They were eventually able to buy mill equipment and now the only parts of the process they don’t do is scour and comb the wool. The Spincycle that we carry comes from sheep raised primarily in South Dakota and Wyoming. It’s fun for us to know that we were among the first yarn shops to carry their yarn!

Knitters all over the US and beyond are taking part in this KAL! Let’s jump on the bandwagon and join the party! You can join their Ravelry or Facebook groups if you like.

Remember that we’d love to help you choose a pattern and yarn for this or any other project!

Happy knitting,
