Make a Zap Cap!

We’ve discovered a hat pattern that is perfect for your school colors!  Of course, it will be good for any color combination but we especially love it to show your school spirit!

This is the Zap Cap, designed by Park Williams. She wants her patterns to be fun and this design certainly fits that requirement!

Julie is currently working on one for Fort Collins High School and she’ll be making another one or two or three soon! She’s the inspiration behind the school colors idea.

I searched My Sister Knits for colors that represent our local high schools plus CSU and CU. Please feel free to find your own colors but here are the ones I found in case you want to go with them. The yarns have different looks with different amounts of plys and different spinning methods. I think it would create a lot of interest to put them together in this hat!

Julie had already searched out the golds. Several of our schools use gold as one of their colors and she found that Cascade Heritage Sock has a really good one. I found a few others that might work also.

For those of you who are not local, I hope that you can get some ideas from these color combinations!

Rocky Mountain High School: Woolstok Light Red Rock and Spun Gold.

Poudre High School: Kaos Electric and Fair.

Fossil Ridge High School: Kaos Fair and Cascade Heritage color number 5608.

Fort Collins High School: you’ll have to trust me here because the purple looks blackish on my computer! The purple yarn is Balayage color number 604 and the gold is Woolstok Light Spun Gold.

CSU colors: I found a gold that is just enough different from the others to be more like the CSU gold. It is Myak Tibetan Cloud in Botton D’Oro. The green is Cascade Heritage color number 5608.

CU colors: Bayalage color number 619 and Woolstok Light Spun Gold. Honestly, I cannot tell which of the Balyage yarns is black and which is purple! I humbly ask for your understanding if I got the two mixed up. I do know that the color numbers are correct!

A few notes about the pattern:

  • We encourage you to do a gauge swatch. The hat is a snug fitting beanie and you don’t want it to be too small. If you want a bit of a looser fit, you might want to go up a needle size after you get gauge. You also might want to try on our sample to get an idea of the fit.

  • The only stitches you use are the knit stitch and K2tog!

  • You don’t need to catch your floats!

  • Be sure to read the notes in the box on page 2.

  • The charts are easy to follow.

When you buy yarn for this hat, we’d love to know if you’re making a hat for a school or just because you adore the two colors you’re putting together. Be sure to tell us! We delight in knowing what you’re planning to create!

Happy Knitting,
