Ready for Spring Knitting?

The crocuses are coming up in the garden at My Sister Knits! Spring brings happy colors and visions of evenings on the patio or deck when a light wrap might be needed.

A search of the shop shows an abundance of joyful spring colors in lightweight yarns. We have solids, tonals, variegated, and speckles to suit every taste.

One skein of fingering weight yarn should be enough to make a spring shawl to throw on as the occasion arises. We have a selection on display but you might also want to browse Ravelry for patterns. By looking at the designs, you can decide if you’d like a cheerful spring shawl with lace, cables, textured stitches, or a combination of design elements!

As you’re looking at shawls on Ravelry keep in mind the yarn you want to use. If it’s variegated or speckled, take that into account. Would the yarn obscure the pattern if it contains cables or lace? Would it show off best in a shawl with texture?

Hue Loco Spun Sock; a blend of Superwash Merino, Cashmere, and Nylon

On the other hand, if you have a tonal or solid, would it make cables or lace pop and catch the eye of the beholder? Would texture maybe be a bit boring? These are things to ponder.

Ravelry Search

Here is how we would suggest you search Ravelry for patterns:

  • click on ‘patterns’ to the left of the top bar, next to the word Ravelry

  • Click on ‘advanced search’ under the Search Patterns box

  • Find the Category box and choose Accessories

  • Choose Neck/Torso

  • Choose Shawl/Wrap...you’ll notice there are 72,879.  We’ll narrow that down!

  • Find the Weight box and choose fingering which narrows it down to 24,456!

  • Find the Craft box and choose knitting which narrows it down to 20,553

  • In the Availability box choose Ravelry download which gets it down to 16,494 patterns.  We suggest this because you don’t want to fall in love with a pattern only to find it’s out of print or available in a book that you have to buy!

  • Find the Yardage box and choose 300 - 450 yards if you only want to use one skein;  now you have 4,493 patterns to choose from

  • Find the Colors Used box and choose 1, assuming you’re using one skein and this narrows the number of pattern choices to 3,344

You could double up and use both Practically Perfect Sock and Marvelous Mohair for a fun effect! The weight would be more of a DK or Sport though.

You can play around with other filters but these are the basic ones to significantly focus your search using one skein of fingering weight yarn.

Now, if you’d like to, play around with the filters in the ‘Sort by’ box near the top of the page.

As you scroll through the patterns you’re sure to find one that absolutely suits your desire for a spring shawl as we move into warmer weather!

We encourage you to come in and find a skein of fingering weight yarn to make a gorgeous lightweight shawl while looking forward to spring. Give yourself some time to browse as there are so many possibilities! We’re also happy to help you choose a pattern!

Happy knitting,

Jenny
