Emilia and Philomene Have Arrived!

Emilia & Philomene yarns have only been available for three years.  Lucky for us, Julie found them!

Amelie, founder of Emilia and Philomene, “has a desire for everything that is done slowly, but that is part of time”.  This is reflected in her yarns. Her dyeing workshop is located in Magog, Quebec in a century-old house.  Amelie likes to think that she is practicing a craft that generations of women before her also enjoyed.

Emilia and Philomene yarns are named after Amelie’s ancestors and family friends.  There is a story about each of them on her website.

We have three of Amelie’s yarns!

Leona

This 72% Mohair/28% Murrant silk blend is the softest of blends!  Leona was Amelie’s grandmother who took a nap every day at 3:00 pm and made the entire household be quiet during that time.  She also “ made the best sugar pie and had the sweetest arms in the world.”  A lace weight yarn, this knits up into projects that are light as down!

Adelina

The secret ingredient in this yarn is yak!  It adds a sheen and drape to any project.  Made with 70% Merino/20% Yak/10% nylon, fingering weight Adelina is even great for socks due to the nylon which adds strength.  Adelina “took her time to like you, but became an unwavering ally once she had adopted you.”

Josephine

This yarn rounds out our Emilia & Philomene collection.  It is a fingering weight 100% untreated Merino.  Josephine was Italian and her name was Giuseppina. “Her smiles, rather rare, were all the more precious when she had them.”

Amelie was able to create her gorgeously rich colorways on yarn that has not been superwashed.  She believes that “hand-dyeing in a traditional way means finding beauty in imperfections. Each dye bath, even if the colour recipe is the same, is unique for those who look closely. Sometimes I have the impression that colours are sensitive to temperatures and emotions.”

We invite you to imagine the history of the women these yarns are named after as you pick them up and examine them! We can connect with them in our minds as we knit with these beautiful fibers!
