Shibui Knits for Summer KAL!

My Sister Knits announces our third KAL of this ‘at home’ period, starting as soon as you get your yarn! This is one that will take a little longer to finish but will result in a stunning summer weight poncho! In contrast to our last KAL which created a rather rustic shawl, this poncho is elegant and versatile.

We may be introducing some of you to a new designer who we love for her classic, sophisticated, clean lines and superb instructions, Shellie Anderson. Shellie designed for Shibui Knits for about five years and is now designing under her own label, Shel Designs. All of her designs can be found on Ravelry.

We had this poncho at our booth at Interweave Yarn Fest a few years ago and it looked terrific on every single person who tried it on. The sample was the middle size and it’s quite flexible.

Aalto is two stockinette rectangles worked bottom up with a touch of shaping at the neck and shoulders. The stockinette stitch is ideal for our concentration level right now, which seems to be almost nil! Shellie’s directions are clear and easy to follow. If this is your first time with a little bit of shaping, this is the perfect project! The shoulders are joined with a 3 Needle Bind Off which is fun to do and you’ll feel so clever! There is a 2” backstitch seam at the sides and voila!, you’re done!

Shibui Twig

Aalto calls for either:

Shibui Knits Sport weight Twig, a blend of 46% Linen, 42% Recycled Silk, and 12% wool or

Light fingering weight Pebble, a blend of 48% Recycled Silk, 36% Fine Merino, and 16% Cashmere held together with lace weight Silk Cloud, a blend of 60% Kid Mohair and 40% Silk.

When you purchase Shibui Knits yarn to make your Aalto, you will get the pattern free. On Saturday, May 16th only, we will have a 25% off sale on all Shibui yarn in the shop!  Remember, we continue to have options of porch pick up, free delivery, or free postage right now.  We can also help you choose yarn over the phone if you’d rather not come in, 970.407.1460.

Shellie gives excellent instructions in the ‘Techniques’ section of the pattern. Here are links if you’d like to try them before you get started!  German Twisted Cast On, German Short Rows (these couldn’t be easier!), and the Three Needle Bind Off.  If any of these techniques are new to you and seem complicated, we encourage you to try them with some spare yarn.  Also, look at various youtube videos to see which ones you like the best.

If you’d like to participate in this KAL but haven’t joined our Facebook KAL group, you can find us by entering ‘MSK KAL’ in the Facebook search bar; we’d love to have you!
