Join Our Try Something Different Project!

Happy New Year!  We at My Sister Knits came up with a fun idea of how to kick off our creativity in 2020!

Jenny is hosting our Try Something Different Project!  The formal part of this project will last from now until Saturday, March 21st.  The informal part may go on all year!

Try a new yarn!

Here is our idea:

We want to encourage you to branch out and try something different!  That’s it. There is no pressure and there are no deadlines for finished projects. What there will be is a vast amount of cheering you on as you join our Try Something Different Project!

Your ‘something different’ can be as simple as working with a different weight of yarn or as complicated as you’d like to make it!  This is going to be exciting! We have some suggestions to jump start your own ideas.

You could:

  • work with a new color

  • try a different category of project; if you usually make hats you could make a shawl

  • try a different shape; if you usually make triangular shawls you could try a crescent shape

  • use a needle size that you don’t usually use

  • try a new technique such as cables, lace, slipped stitches, colorwork, etc.

  • take a class

  • choose a yarn brand that is new to you

  • choose a yarn fiber that is new to you

  • tackle a project you’ve always wanted to make but something has been holding you back

  • use a different needle brand or material to see how you like it

  • Do you always knit flat?  Try something in the round!

  • Try a new designer!

You can make this as easy on yourself as you like...a way to gently slip into the new year trying something new.

Try a new technique or different shape!

We are going to get together on Saturday, January 18th from 3:00 - 4:30 to talk about what we have planned and work on it if you’ve started it by then.  This would also be a good time to decide and buy materials.

We will have another chance to get together on Saturday, February 22nd from 3:00 - 4:30 for the same purpose. It won’t be too late to decide to join in our TSD Project!

Then on Saturday, March 21st we will get together for our Final Reveal, again from 3:00 - 4:30!  You don’t have to have a finished project, just bring what you have in progress.  As a matter of fact, if you tried something different and it didn’t suit you at all, that’s ok!  We think it will be enjoyable to hear everyone’s experiences!

At our Final Reveal party, there will be drawings for several surprises to acknowledge your leap into something different!

Try a different needle!

To take part in our TSD Project, send an email to shop@mysisterknits.com with your plan for what you’re going to try. The Project starts as soon as you read this so you can jump in at any time!

To kick it off, I will say what my plan is...I am going to make Elizabeth Doherty’s Elorie out of Qince & CO Kestrel in the natural colorway Senza.  This project has several things that are different for me: it’s a bit daunting; I am going to wash and dry my linen swatch in the machine which is a scary idea and then I’m going to trust my swatch (see this post!); I haven’t made a pullover out of Kestrel; this may require some modification that will be new to me; and I’m working with a color that I haven’t used.

Your project only needs to have one different element, not several like mine!

We look forward to learning what is one thing you’re going to experience that is different from your habitual knitting routine. Join our Try Something Different Project and send us an email today!
